On New Year’s Eve the Celebrating 2017 year was wrapped up by re-sealing the ‘W’ time capsule which was created during the city’s centennial in 1992. Twenty five items will remain from the centennial collection, with 25 new items added from 2017. The items were added to the capsule by members of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team as well as a few special guests noted below.
1) The Happy Birthday banner that was on display at Windsor’s 125th birthday party, as well as birthday messages written by those who attended the party.
2) A flyer promoting 25 cool facts about Windsor that was circulated to local schools to help students learn more about the city’s history.
3) A list of Windsor’s centenarians in 2017, submitted by 101-year-old Elmira Frenette, who won the title of Miss Windsor in 1935.

4) A list of recipients of the Celebrating 2017 Mayor’s Awards, as well as a group photo from the event, held at Willistead Manor. This was submitted by 6-year-old Olivia Lefaive, winner of the Civic Booster Youth award, and the youngest Mayor’s Award recipient.
5) Photographs from the 2017 Mayor’s Walk.
6) A photograph of the Windsor Spitfires, the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions.
7) A photograph from Open Streets – Ontario 150 Edition, Windsor’s largest, free, outdoor event, as well as an Ontario 150 pin and a 3D printed trillium submitted by Michael Chantler, executive director of Open Streets.
8) A photograph from the raising of the Great Canadian Flag, as well as one of the flags used to test the flag pole, submitted by Ann Arquette.
9) A USB containing photos from the #myWindsor2017 and #myWindsorparty, two photo campaigns that ran during the Celebrating 2017 year.
10) A book of local poetry called “Because We All Have Lived Here – Poems Along the South Shore” by the Group of Seven Poets. This was submitted by Marty Gervais, a member of the Group of Seven Poets and also Windsor’s poet laureate.
11) A USB containing the re-enactment of an 1892 city council meeting, as well as the script, submitted by the author of the script Christopher Menard.
12) A t-shirt given to volunteers at various Celebrating 2017 events.
13) A copy of the Windsor Star from July 8, 2017 showing the success of the SESQUI Dome in Windsor.
14) Photographs from the 2017 Canada Day parade and the swearing in ceremony.
15) A photograph from the Mayor’s “Youth Q&A – Live” held on Facebook, with a surprise visit from Premiere Kathleen Wynne.
16) A photograph of the Centennial Committee who sealed the time capsule in 1992, reopening it in 2017. This was submitted by Linda Chakmak and David Garlick, both members of the 1992 Centennial Committee.
17) A USB containing the opening ceremony of Bright Lights Windsor submitted by Pam Labute, Manager of Community Development at the City’s Recreation & Culture Department.
18) A banner full of signatures collected by All Saints’ Church during Open Streets, plus the program from their Interfaith Service held just because sealing the time capsule on December 31, 2017. This was submitted by Reverend Robert Clifford, Gale Carter and Joan Carter of All Saints’ Church.
19) A flyer detailing the statistics of the flood that happened between August 28 and 29, 2017 – the worst in the city’s history.
20) A copy of the Windsor Star article signed by Minister Eric Hoskins while he was in Windsor to announce that a new single site acute care hospital is moving forward in Windsor-Essex, submitted by Ron Foster of Windsor Regional Hospital.
21) A USB containing a video created by members of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team to show what life was like in 2017 for youth.
22) A copy of the Windsor Star from December 30, 2017, submitted by the Star’s editor-in-cheif, Ellen Van Wageningen.

The time capsule has been sealed and will be held at Museum Windsor. It will be reopened in 2042 to celebrate Windsor’s 150th birthday, giving future Windsorites a glimpse into our lives here in 2017. Thank you to everyone who participated in our Celebrating 2017 events – it was a great year.
