Today’s announcement provides a framework for next steps and establishes a regional framework for local re-openings.

As of today, we understand the Windsor-Essex region will not be included in the first wave of districts empowered to allow for a staged re-opening. As case incidence of COVID-19 continues to decline in our community, the Province of Ontario will be updating their recommendations on a weekly basis.

For the last few weeks, the City of Windsor has been preparing for the prospect of local and regional reopening. As an employer and service provider, the City of Windsor, has been preparing for an eventual re-opening of City Hall and other municipal facilities when public health conditions warrant. Based on the announcement from the Province of Ontario today, we will not be adjusting the current level of service delivery at this time. Arenas, pools, community centres and libraries will remain closed until further notice.

The City of Windsor has moved the delivery of many public services online and the 311 call centre remains open to respond to municipal business. Last week, the City of Windsor began an on-line consultation with parents to determine the interest in summer day-camp programming and we look forward to the results of that survey.

At the same time, the City of Windsor continues to find ways to support local small businesses as they prepare for their future re-opening, including:

  • Waiving fees and charges associated with restaurant patios;
  • Supporting local BIA’s to temporarily close streets to allow for open-air markets;
  • Providing 5000 litres of free hand sanitizer to local entrepreneurs; and
  • Championing #TakeoutTuesday and #ShopYQG

The City of Windsor supports the Province of Ontario’s decision regarding a phased and staged reopening, including the regional model announced today. While the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many changes to our daily lives and put many livelihoods at stake – nothing is more important than the health and welfare of our neighbours, family and friends.
