This is a big day for Canada’s competitive diving world, and for the City of Windsor. I’m proud to announce that Windsor has been selected as the new host city for the 2020-2021 FINA Diving Grand Prix. Each year, this event invites the international diving elite from around the world to compete for medals and world ranking points in a circuit of four-day meets.
This FINA competition will once again put Windsor on the map alongside other host cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Gold Coast, Madrid and Cairo. We will host over 100 divers from over 15 countries during this Olympic year, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue to welcome the best of the best aquatics competitors while showcasing some of what makes Windsor such an incredible place to be.
Meanwhile, we’re pleased to welcome Diving Canada back this weekend as we host the 2019 Summer National Championships with Olympians once again competing in our state-of-the-art Windsor International Aquatic and Training Center. 54 athletes representing 15 clubs from across Canada, along with their coaches and supporters, are here to compete against one another and to attempt to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
It’s exciting to see this pool filled with the type of talented competitors these events attract, and to have these divers inspire our next generation of athletes to dream big and to work hard to chase those dreams. Thanks to our friends at Diving Plongeon Canada, the entire FINA Diving family, and our own Tourism Windsor Essex colleagues for believing in Windsor… and in what is possible here.
