Edward Chandler Walker, second son of Hiram Walker, was responsible for the building of Willistead Manor in 1905. He and his wife Mary moved into the residence in 1906, and assembled a large collection of art during their time there. After Mary’s death in the 1930s much of their art was bequeathed to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. This included a portrait of Edward, painted by Julius Garibaldi “Gari” Melchers. Today we had the pleasure of seeing this portrait returned to its original home at Willistead Manor.
